Private Canadian Peace Initiative for Ukraine and Russia
In light of the recent critical peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, we were inspired to share our perspective and are proposing several possible courses of action to aid in moving toward a peaceful outcome. They are as follows:
We understand that it has been a point of contention with regards to the necessity of a ceasefire prior to negotiations. We would certainly support President Trump’s request for a thirty-day ceasefire. We understand, however, that a compromise may be needed on this issue, and if the thirty days is not agreeable to both Russia and Ukraine, perhaps a one-to-two week ceasefire could be considered to allow the negotiations to begin in the best way.
Given the complexity of this conflict and the involvement of so many critical powers, we believe it would be important to include representatives from countries that have played a pivotal role in trying to resolve the conflict.
We would propose that representatives from the following countries be included at the negotiations held at the Vatican. The Governments of the United States, China, UK, France, Germany, India, as well as Canada. These countries could offer support and different perspectives with regards to helping reach a consensus with regards to a solution.
Any consensus that is reached must be agreed upon by both the Governments of Ukraine and Russia. We would, however, suggest that President Zelenski have the option of taking any agreement to his population in a referendum which could add a degree of legitimacy to the outcome. We are also suggesting that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV be invited to participate as well in these talks along with representatives from the UN.
We believe there would be an advantage to having the leaders of these countries be present at these negotiations, as this would give the greatest chance of success. President Trump has already stated that he would be more than willing to attend personally if it could be helpful.
